Greek Anti-Austerity Party Wins Elections

Religious Debt Relief Organization Releases Statement

WASHINGTON

Greece's Interior Ministry projects that the anti-austerity Syriza party won the majority of Greek Parliament seats. However, it remains unclear if Syriza won the supermajority of 151 seats needed to govern Greece alone.

Eric LeCompte, Executive Director of the religious debt relief organization Jubilee USA Network, releases the following statement:

"This election was a referendum on austerity and debt policies. The people of Greece voted and said no to austerity and yes to renegotiating Greece's debt.

"Austerity programs can be likened to trying to help a patient on life support by punching them."

- Eric LeCompte is Executive Director of Jubilee USA Network and serves United Nations expert groups that analyze global debt issues.
