CAIR Seeks Stepped-Up Protection for NC Mosque After Hate Incident

WASHINGTON

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation's largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on law enforcement authorities to step up patrols in the area of a North Carolina mosque following an incident in which a man was arrested after he reportedly attempted to desecrate the house of worship and threatened its worshipers.

The man was arrested and charged with communicating threats after a series of incidents Thursday targeting Masjid Al Madina in Raeford, N.C. Yesterday afternoon, a bag filled with bacon was found at the entrance of the mosque.

A Muslim chaplain at Fort Bragg was allegedly approached by the man who showed him a gun and threatened to blow up the mosque. Yesterday evening, the man reportedly attempted to run over a group of people entering the mosque for the Ramadan evening prayer. (Hoke County Sheriff's Department Incident #16060147.)

In a statement, CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper said:

"We call on state law enforcement authorities and the FBI to investigate this incident as a possible hate crime. We also ask local police to step up patrols in the area of this and other North Carolina mosques, particularly during the nightly activities associated with the ongoing fast of Ramadan."

Incidents targeting American Muslims and their religious institutions have spiked in recent months, prompted at least in part by anti-Muslim rhetoric employed by public figures like Donald Trump.
