Zimmermann is president of the Global Labor Organization; co-director of Centre for Population, Development and Labour Economics at United Nations University – Maastricht Economic and Social Research Institute on Innovation and Technology (UNU-MERIT); emeritus professor of economics at Bonn University; member, Leopoldina German Academy of Sciences, Regional Science Academy, and Academia Europaea, the European Academy of Sciences; editor-in-chief of the Journal of Population Economics; research fellow of the Centre for Economic Policy Research, fellow of the European Economic Association and of the International Economic Association; founding director, Institute for the Study of Labor.
