Latina Advocates Applaud Historic Marriage Equality Decision

Urge lawmakers to continue unfinished work to secure human rights of LGBTQ people

WASHINGTON

Today, the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health (NLIRH) celebrates today's Supreme Court decision to uphold the right of same-sex couples to marry, and be recognized as married, in all 50 states.

Jessica Gonzalez-Rojas, executive director of NLIRH, issued the following statement:

"Today's decision, upholding the freedom to marry and be recognized as married in all 50 states, marks an important victory for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people. The rights and privileges of marriage, including access to health coverage under family insurance plans, are significant. This ruling brings us closer to the day when all couples, and all families, are treated with dignity and respect. However, our work to secure full human rights and liberation for LGBTQ people is far from over.

"Even as we celebrate this step forward, queer and transgender immigrants are being held in detention centers where they are subjected to isolation, assault, and the denial of healthcare; LGBTQ youth face higher rates of homelessness; and transgender women experience unconscionable violence, including at the hands of police. At the same time, religion is being used by some as an excuse to violate the law, discriminate, deny healthcare, and cause real harm to LGBTQ people. We can, and must, do better. We call on our lawmakers to mark this moment by recommitting themselves to the unfinished work of human and civil rights for all, no matter who you are or who you love."

The National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health is the only national reproductive justice organization dedicated to building Latina power to advance health, dignity, and justice for 26 million Latinas, their families, and communities in the United States through leadership development, community mobilization, policy advocacy, and strategic communications.
