NARAL Statement on Indiana Abortion Ban

As one of the nation's most extreme anti-abortion measures was signed into law Thursday in Indiana, NARAL called out Governor Mike Pence for restricting Americans' constitutional right to choose abortion care. The abortion ban prohibits abortion in the case of fetal anomalies and forces doctors to ask invasive and non-medically necessary questions in an attempt to intimidate women from accessing abortion care.

WASHINGTON

As one of the nation's most extreme anti-abortion measures was signed into law Thursday in Indiana, NARAL called out Governor Mike Pence for restricting Americans' constitutional right to choose abortion care. The abortion ban prohibits abortion in the case of fetal anomalies and forces doctors to ask invasive and non-medically necessary questions in an attempt to intimidate women from accessing abortion care.

"This is one of the most extreme anti-abortion measures in the country and only further penalizes Indiana women and their doctors for accessing constitutionally protected abortion care," said Ilyse Hogue, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America. "Preventing a woman from choosing abortion based on a medical diagnosis substitutes a politician's ideology for a woman's judgement. Politicians like Governor Pence who insert themselves into a woman's private medical decisions aren't just practicing bad medicine, they're betraying the seven in ten Americans who support safe and legal access to abortion. Instead of confronting the very real challenges our nation faces, Governor Pence has decided to focus instead on taking away Hoosiers' constitutional right to access abortion. Governor Pence's priorities couldn't be more out-of-touch and we will continue to oppose his dangerous attempts to limit women's access to a full range of reproductive health options."

For over 50 years, Reproductive Freedom for All (formerly NARAL Pro-Choice America) has fought to protect and advance reproductive freedom at the federal and state levels—including access to abortion care, birth control, pregnancy and post-partum care, and paid family leave—for everybody. Reproductive Freedom for All is powered by its more than 4 million members from every state and congressional district in the country, representing the 8 in 10 Americans who support legal abortion.
