Individuals surveyed in the project, published in June by the journal Energy Policy, indicated they would shift electricity use to cut fossil fuel consumption and carbon emissions regardless of political affiliation, age or gender.

The researchers are using the study's findings to develop an app that will allow users to monitor where their electricity is coming from in real time and use more renewable sources in lieu of fossil fuels by shifting consumption practices.

"Americans have once again overwhelmingly shown their support for renewable energy. This study adds to the growing evidence that we can and must rapidly shift away from dirty fossil fuels to a society powered by wind and solar," said Chad Tudenggongbu, senior renewable energy campaigner at the Center for Biological Diversity. At the Center for Biological Diversity, we believe that the welfare of human beings is deeply linked to nature — to the existence in our world of a vast diversity of wild animals and plants. Because diversity has intrinsic value, and because its loss impoverishes society, we work to secure a future for all species, great and small, hovering on the brink of extinction. We do so through science, law and creative media, with a focus on protecting the lands, waters and climate that species need to survive.
