Civil and Human Rights Coalition Calls for Sham Voter Commission to Be Shut Down

WASHINGTON

Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement following a lawsuit filed against the so-called Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity by one of its own commissioners:

"It's simply telling that a member of President Trump's voter suppression commission is taking it to court because it is operating in a secretive manner and denying him access to documents and information to which he is lawfully entitled. Maine Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap's lawsuit only underscores that it's well past time to shut down this sham commission. This sham commission is nothing more than a political ploy to provide cover for the president's wild and unfounded claims of mass voter fraud, and to effectuate his administration's plans to purge millions of eligible voters from the rolls. It is the Pence-Kobach commission that lacks integrity and credibility.

Voting rights must not be threatened by partisanship. The legitimacy of our democracy depends on ensuring that every eligible voter can participate in the electoral process. The federal government should be addressing the very serious problems this country has in its elections, from voter suppression to Russian interference."
