350 Action Responds to Sen. Bernie Sanders Call for Political Candidates to Refuse Money from the Fossil Fuel Industry

WASHINGTON

Tonight, Senator Bernie Sanders committed once again to refuse campaign contributions from the fossil fuel industry, and called for progressive political candidates committed to climate action to do the same. 350 Action Executive Director May Boeve gave the following statement in response:

"It should be a no-brainer for Democrats to refuse money from the fossil fuel industry. As Republicans rally behind Trump's attempts to gut regulations on new fossil fuel infrastructure and dig us deeper into climate crisis, progressives must boldly rebuke Big Oil's grasp on our government. Senator Sanders has laid the groundwork, and it's time for all candidates who claim a serious commitment to climate action to follow suit."

During his campaign for President, Senator Sanders refused money from the fossil fuel industry and has pledged to continue doing so. In 2017, Senator Sanders joined Senator Jeff Merkley to introduce the "100 by 2050 Act" that would put massive investment in a fast and just transition to 100% renewable energy by 2050. Sanders joined Bill McKibben, Cherri Foytlin, the Rev. Lennox Yearwood Jr., and dozens of other climate leaders at a 'Climate State of the Union' event in Washington, DC this evening.

350 is building a future that's just, prosperous, equitable and safe from the effects of the climate crisis. We're an international movement of ordinary people working to end the age of fossil fuels and build a world of community-led renewable energy for all.
