Greenpeace Response To John Kerry's Appointment as Special Presidential Envoy on Climate

In response to John Kerry's appointment as Special Presidential Envoy on Climate, Greenpeace Climate Campaign Director Janet Redman says:

"With little more than a decade left to prevent the worst impacts of the climate crisis, Joe Biden has taken a good first step by appointing John Kerry, who has years of experience in climate diplomacy, as the Special Presidential Envoy on Climate. The appointment is a positive sign for Biden's intention to integrate climate leadership into every facet of the administration.

WASHINGTON

In response to John Kerry's appointment as Special Presidential Envoy on Climate, Greenpeace Climate Campaign Director Janet Redman says:

"With little more than a decade left to prevent the worst impacts of the climate crisis, Joe Biden has taken a good first step by appointing John Kerry, who has years of experience in climate diplomacy, as the Special Presidential Envoy on Climate. The appointment is a positive sign for Biden's intention to integrate climate leadership into every facet of the administration.

"The Biden-Harris administration has an opportunity to act on the clear mandate set by millions of climate voters who elected them to protect people and the planet. Rejoining the Paris Climate Agreement, which Kerry signed on behalf of the U.S. in 2016, should be the baseline for Biden's climate ambition, not the ceiling. We must start the managed transition away from fossil fuels now and use our country's place as a global leader to work with countries around the world to do so responsibly. This means at home a commitment to a Green New Deal-style economic recovery plan that includes a just transition for workers and their families, not just golden parachutes for CEOs.

"In addition to the Kerry appointment, Biden must empower a climate council to act on the substantive changes we need to survive. We deserve a world beyond fossil fuels -- a world in which workers' rights, community health, and our shared climate come before corporate profits. Right now, John Kerry has an unprecedented chance to lay the groundwork."
