Biden: "We Already Have Significant Representation of Progressives in Our Administration"

In response to Joe Biden's

WASHINGTON

In response to Joe Biden's statement saying "We already have significant representation of progressives in our administration but nothing is off the table," Justice Democrats executive director Alexandra Rojas and Sunrise Movement Executive Director Varshini Prakash released the following joint statement:

"While we have been encouraged by some of Joe Biden's appointments and are largely relieved by who he has not chosen, we do not agree that progressives already have significant representation in the administration as it stands. We are also concerned that many of the future picks currently being floated skew old, white, and male. Joe Biden promised to have an administration that looked like and represents the diversity of America, and we hope he will keep his promise by appointing progressive women and people of color for further cabinet and administration posts.

"The Biden administration would be significantly strengthened by the appointments of the following leaders:

  • Deb Haaland for Secretary of Interior
  • Heather Boushey or Bharat Ramamurti for National Economic Council Director
  • Darrick Hamilton for Council of Economic Advisors
  • Ali Zaidi for a newly created Office of Climate Mobilization
  • Marcia Fudge or Chellie Pingree for Secretary of Agriculture
  • Karen Bass or Rashida Tlaib for Secretary of Housing and Urban Development
  • Mustafa Santiago Ali, Heather McTeer-Toney, or Donald McEachin for EPA Administrator
  • Pramila Jayapal or Abdul El-Sayed for Health and Human Services

"Progressives make up 40% of the seats Democrats hold in the House of Representatives and deserve adequate representation in the next administration. The composition of the next administration should reflect the mandate that the American people -- especially young people and people of color -- have helped provide the President-elect."

Justice Democrats is recruiting and supporting progressive Democrats all over the country, starting with Congress. We're working to transform the Democratic Party while building independent power. We do this by running primary challengers against out-of-touch Democratic incumbents and organizing to hold the party accountable to our issues.
