Muslim Advocates Cheers Senate Reintroduction of NO BAN Act

WASHINGTON

Today, Sen. Chris Coons (D-CT) reintroduced the NO BAN Act, a bill that would close loopholes in immigration law to prevent future presidents from enacting another Muslim Ban or similar, discriminatory bans. A companion bill (H.R. 1333) introduced by Rep. Judy Chu (D-CA) was passed by the House in April. Muslim Advocates has worked with members of Congress to support the bill and also leads the NO BAN Act Coalition, an alliance of over 100 diverse civic, civil rights, faith and community organizations fighting to end the ban and pass the bill. The following is a statement from Muslim Advocates Senior Policy Counsel Madihha Ahussain:

"The Muslim Ban may have been rescinded but the shameful legacy of Donald Trump's anti-Muslim politics lives on. As the ongoing attacks on Muslim communities and Muslim members of Congress show, anti-Muslim hate is still a powerful force in our society. So while the Muslim Ban is currently not law, it is possible that a future president will try to harness this hate for political gain once more by reinstating the Muslim Ban. That is why we must pass the NO BAN Act. This necessary bill will ensure that no president again can ban people because of their faith or nationality.

We want to thank Sen. Coons, who has been a passionate and stalwart leader on this issue and who has been working from day one to protect the rights of Muslims, Africans and other people targeted by the Muslim Ban. We also want to thank Reps. Chu, Jayapal, Tlaib, Omar, Carson and all the other House members who have worked on this measure. We urge all senators to join Sen. Coons in support of the NO BAN Act and send it to the president's desk."
