Oil Change International Response to TC Energy's Historic Announcement on the Cancellation of the Keystone XL Pipeline

WASHINGTON

Moments ago, TC Energy, the company behind the proposed tar sands Keystone XL Pipeline, announced it was officially withdrawing support for the Keystone XL Pipeline. The pipeline, which would have carried dirty tar sands across 1,700 miles from Alberta, Canada to refineries in the Texas Gulf Coast, had been blocked by the Biden Administration in January of this year. However, this announcement from TC Energy is the final nail in the coffin for the zombie pipeline--and a tremendous victory for communities who have fought this pipeline for nearly a decade.

In response to today's historic announcement, David Turnbull, Strategic Communications Director with Oil Change International released the following statement:

"TC Energy just confirmed what we already knew but it's a thrilling reality all the same -- the Keystone XL pipeline is no more and never will be. This is yet another huge moment in an historic effort. While the press release leaves it unsaid, this project is finally being abandoned thanks to more than a decade of resistance from Indigenous communities, landowners, farmers, ranchers, and climate activists along its route and around the world.

"This is a victory for the movement for climate justice, and a confirmation that Big Oil is no match for power power. The cancellation of Keystone XL is a reminder that this project was never needed and never in the public interest, and that it is time for the fossil fuel era to rapidly come to a close.

"TC Energy's announcement only increases the urgency for President Joe Biden to act immediately to stop the Line 3 and Dakota Access oil pipelines. These projects are dangerous and unnecessary for all the same reasons Keystone XL was, and they must be halted for Biden and climate advisor Gina McCarthy to keep their commitments on climate change and Indigenous rights."

Oil Change International is a research, communications, and advocacy organization focused on exposing the true costs of fossil fuels and facilitating the ongoing transition to clean energy.
