Color of Change: Sen. Joe Manchin Is Fighting a One-Man War to Stall Racial Justice, Undermine Majority Rule

WASHINGTON

Scott Roberts, Senior Director of Criminal Justice and Democracy Campaigns at Color Of Change, issued this statement in response to remarks from Sen. Joe Manchin opposing H.R. 1, the "For The People" Act:

"Senator Joe Manchin's obstructionist politics continue to put the lives and rights of Black people in jeopardy. This week, Senator Manchin came out strongly against H.R. 1, the 'For The People' Act, a critical proposal that would restore and expand federal voting rights protections and block discriminatory voter restrictions. As local lawmakers in nearly all 50 states have passed or are currently considering bills that would roll back voting rights particularly for Black communities, Manchin's opposition to H.R. 1 is not just misguided; it's racist. And as Congress sets one of its most progressive agendas to-date, Senator Manchin and other moderate Democrats like Senator Kyrsten Sinema have positioned themselves as major impediments to racial justice.

"Despite broad support for voting rights access, justice reform, community violence prevention, and other key priorities for Black people in America, Manchin is fighting a one-man war to block these measures and undermine the will of the people. The Senate filibuster has a long history as a tool used to delay or prevent civil rights protections, and Senator Manchin's recent op-ed indicates that he is deeply committed to preserving that disturbing tradition. It's time to restore majority rule. We need all Senate Democrats to meet the urgency of this moment, reform the racist filibuster, and pass critical legislation like H.R. 1 to protect the rights of Black communities."
