Sunrise Movement Responds to Pelosi Reversal: This is a Betrayal

WASHINGTON

This summer, Speaker Pelosi said, "Let me be really clear on this: We will not take up a bill in the House until the Senate passes the bipartisan bill and a reconciliation bill." Following her reversal of this last night, Varshini Prakash, Executive Director of Sunrise Movement, released the following statement:

"It's honestly absurd to us that Speaker Pelosi has gone back on her word and become a pawn for a small group of representatives bought out by the fossil fuel industry. This is a betrayal. The decision to pass the bipartisan infrastructure package prior to reconciliation is a stab in the back to millions of young people, working people and every person who is counting on the government to deliver for them. This is a pathetic and weak showing by the Democratic Party. This is why young people don't believe in our government or in our politicians. This is why Democrats are on the path to losing their majorities in 2022.

"How does Pelosi expect Biden to go to COP26, claiming that we're fighting the climate crisis when they can't even pass a climate infrastructure bill? Any Democrat who votes for the bipartisan bill ahead of reconciliation is doing it at the expense of our generation and we will not forget."

Sunrise Movement will stand with People's Watch at the Capitol all week to keep the pressure up on Democratic Leadership to deliver at least a $3.5 trillion reconciliation package with bold climate provisions.

Sunrise Movement is a movement to stop climate change and create millions of good jobs in the process.
