WASHINGTON

On Wednesday afternoon, after the Biden administration announced it will sign an executive order to make the government's carbon emissions net neutral by 2050, Deirdre Shelly, Campaign Director of Sunrise Movement, released the following statement:

"Biden can't use this one executive order to cover up the fact that Build Back Better - our best chance at meaningful climate legislation in his administration - has not passed. President Biden has said all along that he wants the entire U.S. economy to decarbonize by 2050; realistically, that's only possible if the U.S. government decarbonizes well before then. And even then, it's near impossible to get to that goal if the White House refuses to stop fossil fuel extraction on public lands.

"If Biden wants to be the climate President, it's time to stand up against the fossil fuel industry, pass executive actions that actually meet the moment of the climate crisis, whip support from every elected official in his own party, and seize this narrow window of opportunity to pass climate legislation while Democrats still have a governing coalition. Anything less is a failure."

Not only has Build Back Better not passed, Biden has received significant blowback for breaking his campaign promise of banning new oil and natural gas leasing on public land and water.

Sunrise Movement is a movement to stop climate change and create millions of good jobs in the process.
