NARAL Pro-Choice America Endorses John Fetterman for U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania

WASHINGTON

Today, NARAL Pro-Choice America announced its endorsement of Lieutenant Gov. John Fetterman for U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania.

NARAL Pro-Choice America President Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:

"John Fetterman is the leader Pennsylvanians need to represent them in the U.S. Senate. NARAL Pro-Choice America is proud to endorse Lt Gov. Fetterman in this critical race, and we know we can count on him to boldly fight for abortion rights and access. As extremist state lawmakers across the country race to enact bans on abortion and Congressional Republicans signal they're on board for a nationwide ban, it is more critical than ever that we elect leaders to the Senate who represent the values of the 8 in 10 Americans who support the legal right to abortion. We're looking forward to getting to work alongside our members in Pennsylvania to make sure he is elected this November."

John Fetterman, candidate for U.S. Senate, said:

"I am honored and humbled to receive the endorsement of NARAL. The right to an abortion is non-negotiable, and it's a disgrace that the Supreme Court shot it down last week. When I'm your next U.S. Senator, I will vote to eliminate the filibuster and protect the right to an abortion. This has been settled for 50 years and is just plain common-sense. I will vote to protect abortion rights, and my opponent, Dr. Oz, will not. It's that simple."

John Fetterman is a leader for reproductive freedom who has vowed to work to lock the protections of Roe v. Wade into federal law through the Women's Health Protection Act. He has represented the people of Pennsylvania as lieutenant governor since 2019. Prior to being elected lieutenant governor, Fetterman was Mayor of Braddock, Pennsylvania from 2006 to 2019. He faces anti-choice extremist and Republican candidate Mehmet Oz in the general election for this open seat. Oz and his anti-choice extremism is at odds with the vast majority of Pennsylvanians who support reproductive freedom.

This endorsement comes as NARAL Pro-Choice America is ramping up its work to elect candidates up and down the ballot during a critical moment in the fight for reproductive freedom. Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in its decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization--ending the constitutional right to abortion and opening the door for extremist state lawmakers to put total bans on abortion in place. This decision is already having a devastating impact throughout the country as multiple states have moved to pass bans on abortion. The people hurt most by attacks on reproductive freedom are those who already face barriers to accessing abortion care--including women; Black, Indigenous, and other people of color; those working to make ends meet; the LGBTQ+ community; immigrants; young people; those living in rural communities; and people with disabilities.

NARAL, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, and EMILY's List recently announced a partnership to collectively spend a historic $150 million on the 2022 midterms to elect reproductive freedom champions across the country.
