Utah Businessman Jonathan Ruga to Address US Commission on Civil Rights on the Gender Wage Gap

Patriotic Millionaire and author of recent Guardian op-ed on fixing capitalism to speak at Gender Gap Briefing

Salt Lake City, Utah

Today, at 1:00 PM MT/3:00 PM ET, Jonathan Ruga, member of the Patriotic Millionaires and CEO and Co-Founder of Sentry Financial Corporation, will address the Utah Advisory Committee to the US Commission on Civil Rights at its public briefing on the Gender Wage Gap in Utah.

In his remarks, he will make the case that one of the largest contributors to the gender wage gap is the fact that minimum wage workers, a group that is disproportionately female, still earn just $7.25 an hour over ten years after Congress last raised the wage. An excerpt from his remarks is below, please contact Sam@patrioticmillionaires.org for the full version.
"If we want to eliminate the wage gap, we need to start giving meaningful wage increases to this massive underclass of women that we require to work for poverty wages (and have so required for years). Virtually no one in Utah or anywhere else in this country can forge out a reasonable existence on $15,000 a year, and by keeping the minimum wage at that level, we're literally consigning these women to an exceptionally difficult life."

The Patriotic Millionaires is a group of high-net worth Americans who share a profound concern about the destabilizing level of inequality in America. Our work centers on the two things that matter most in a capitalist democracy: power and money. Our goal is to ensure that the country's political economy is structured to meet the needs of regular Americans, rather than just millionaires. We focus on three "first" principles: a highly progressive tax system, a livable minimum wage, and equal political representation for all citizens.
