ACLU Comment on Trump Expansion of Muslim Ban

The Trump administration reportedly announced that, three years after first imposing a purportedly temporary Muslim ban by presidential order, it is continuing that ban and expanding its scope to include individuals from six additional countries.

WASHINGTON

The Trump administration reportedly announced that, three years after first imposing a purportedly temporary Muslim ban by presidential order, it is continuing that ban and expanding its scope to include individuals from six additional countries.

The American Civil Liberties Union has been fighting the various iterations of the ban since it was first introduced. The current legal challenge, IRAP v. Trump, was argued Tuesday in the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Omar Jadwat, director of the ACLU's Immigrants' Rights Project, had this reaction to today's announcement:

"The ban should be ended, not expanded. President Trump is doubling down on his signature anti-Muslim policy -- and using the ban as a way to put even more of his prejudices into practice by excluding more communities of color. Families, universities, and businesses in the United States are paying an ever-higher price for President Trump's ignorance and racism."
