Ending Trump's Sabotage of the Postal Service

Statement of Robert Weissman, President, Public Citizen

WASHINGTON

Note: The U.S. House of Representatives today passed the "Delivering for America Act" that would prohibit any further operational changes to the U.S. Postal Service until after the 2020 general election and provide $25 billion in additional funding to the agency.

At a time when Americans are separated and isolated, we more than ever need a strong and vibrant Postal Service to keep us connected.

About that, Donald Trump and his lackey Postmaster General care not a wit. Instead, their focus is on Trump's short-term interest in sabotaging the Post Office in order to disrupt a fair election in November, as well as on the longer-term project of dismantling and privatizing the Postal Service.

Thankfully, with Americans across the country rising up to defend the Postal Service, the House has voted to reverse Postmaster General Louis DeJoy's moves to delay delivery and to give the Postal Service the funding it needs to offset coronavirus-related losses. Now it is time for U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) to call the Senate back from recess and schedule an immediate vote on this legislation.

McConnell's choice is clear: do the bidding of Trump or listen to the clarion call of Americans--of all political parties and persuasions--to defend the Postal Service from sabotage from within.
