Sunrise Movement Says Beto's Climate Plan Is Out of Line With Science and Green New Deal

This morning, Beto O'Rourke released the outline of his climate plan. It states that "to have any chance at limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius and preventing the worst effects of climate change, the latest science demands net-zero emissions by 2050."

WASHINGTON

This morning, Beto O'Rourke released the outline of his climate plan. It states that "to have any chance at limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius and preventing the worst effects of climate change, the latest science demands net-zero emissions by 2050."

Beto's plan sets a goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Leading scientists at Oxfam and other international organizations have said that to meet the goals outlined by the UN, the US should achieve net-zero emissions by around 2030 to meet this global goal, which is reflected in the Green New Deal's call for a 10-year mobilization. Sunrise Movement is calling on all candidates to back this timeline.

Sunrise Executive Director Varshini Prakash issued the following statement:

"We're glad to see Beto release a climate plan as his first policy and commit to making it a day one priority for his administration. He gets a lot right in this plan."

"Unfortunately, Beto gets the science wrong and walks back his commitments from earlier this month in Iowa to move to net-zero emissions by 2030. Beto claims to support the Green New Deal, but his plan is out of line with the timeline it lays out and the scale of action that scientists say is necessary to take here in the United States to give our generation a livable future."

"Beto's decision to release a climate plan as his first policy and his commitment to making it a day one priority for his administration show that climate change is going to be central in the 2020 Democratic primaries -- If he wants to earn the support of young people he needs to show he's ready to stand up to the oil and gas lobby and push for the scale and speed of action we need through a Green New Deal and by signing the No Fossil Fuel Money Pledge."

"When did America become a country that was afraid to take on big challenges and do what's necessary, even when we're told it's not possible?"

Sunrise Movement is a movement to stop climate change and create millions of good jobs in the process.
