WASHINGTON

A bipartisan coalition of state attorneys general led by Colorado and Nebraska filed antitrust lawsuits today against Google for giving preference to its own content in search results. This follows another lawsuit brought by 10 state attorneys general, led by Texas, that targets Google's domination in the advertising business. Alex Harman, competition policy advocate for Public Citizen, released the following statement:

"Public Citizen welcomes the latest antitrust suits against Google targeting the complex web of monopolies that the company has created. Google has built a monopoly in online advertising that is unfair, excludes competitors and drives up prices. And with its control of its search engine, Google has been able to unfairly filter out listings for competitors while promoting its own businesses.

"We have been calling for exactly these kinds of actions, and Congress, state and federal antitrust enforcers have come to the same conclusion: Google must be stopped. Today marks another important step in the process of holding Google accountable, and we look forward to more accountability for other Big Tech monopolies."

Public Citizen is a nonprofit consumer advocacy organization that champions the public interest in the halls of power. We defend democracy, resist corporate power and work to ensure that government works for the people - not for big corporations. Founded in 1971, we now have 500,000 members and supporters throughout the country.
